What Do You Do When You Can’t Sleep?

sleepwalkers beneath the Easter moon twilight ...

Sleepwalkers beneath the Eastern moon twilight, can you imagine?

Let’s set the stage . . . it’s 4 am, you suddenly are awake in your bed and can find no discernible reason why you should not be sleeping soundly as you were two minutes ago. . . but try as you may, sleep, that illusive mistress seems to be beyond your reach again.

It doesn’t matter how many times you rearrange and fluff the pillows, close windows, open them, get a warmer blanket, take some pain killers if you are in pain, move your locale to the couch, etc.  It’s just not happening you are not going back to sleep. Sleep is over for the night, no matter how you want to fight it kicking and screaming all the way.

You can lay there trying, trying, and getting more frustrated by the moment chasing that happy place of slumber. Perhaps you will hit the sleep “lottery” and find whatever magical recipe works for you this time but believe me as you get older these nights of waking and not getting back to sleep seem to be coming more often with the territory. I don’t know about you, but I am not a fan, I love my warm comfy bed and anything that gets me up before my alloted time in “dreamland” is not welcomed by me with loving arms.

I do know, it seems that after I’ve lost the “zone” it’s not coming back and to lie there trying to force it seems like a losing battle. The mind then begins to wander into those dark nooks and crannies that you may not want to shine a bright light on. I’m talking the unhappy topics, those of your demons. The “should haves”, the “could haves”, things you have avoided, all kind of monsters in your mind can seem bigger and badder in these dark hours. Before you let your demons get you, perhaps it is time to face the day, get up and take some action. Perhaps, doing some of those things will relieve you of guilt, keep you busy and start the day. Taking action may make you feel a sense of purpose and getting anything positive done always makes you feel better. If you slay some of the dragons, just think, there will be less weight on your subconscious and perhaps this obnoxious early rising won’t happen again.

Supposedly, the hour of 3 am is when the pathway to the metaphysical world is most strong. So perhaps the angels, spirits and God are trying to speak to you. Why not listen and clean our closet of conscience if that is what they are trying to bring to our attention. So, if you have put things off, feel you may have overlooked someone or something in the protocol section of life, are looking for some answers to tough questions, perhaps this is the otherside, trying to help you work these matters out?

Some people believe the old saying “It’s always darkest before the dawn” and I find your mind can lead you down that road if you let it. Maybe it is best to get up, face the day, realize you didn’t really need any more sleep and enjoy the beauty of the early morn’. It can’t be worse than chasing sleep.

You might even be able to get a jump on the days activities, work, or enjoy a beautiful sunrise with a cup of coffee.

Or you can always Blog. . . after I work out my problems, that’s what I do!
