I was listening to the radio yesterday….talk radio and the guy had me laughing out loud. It might just be me, but he was talking about people riding bikes and how obnoxious they can be or seem to be. Here in the Valley of the Sun, Arizona where it is a wonderful place to ride bikes since we have such great weather, there are herds of bike riders that do not take into account car drivers and how they affects us. They don’t seem to care about driving rules and regulations though they are supposed to follow said rules. On Saturdays, it is actually dangerous to be driving a car there are so many bikes on the road in Ahwatukee where I live, no kidding! It’s been proven people actually drive closer to people with brain buckets on (helmets) because they think they are safer riders and think they know what they are doing! (How stupid is that?) Also, it’s been proven that bike helmets don’t do that much to protect the brain from injury, especially the $50 helmets most people buy.
On to other things that we think protect us…..how about sunscreen? Did you know that SPF is another thing that is not necessarily true? Any SPF over 25-30 is just overkill and nonsense. It’s been proven that people using SPF over 25-30 will have a false sense of security by not using it as frequently thinking it will last 100x as long which is just not true. The best sunscreen seems to be the white old fashioned kind, the bad ones may be the spray ones which may have bad chemicals in them.
So, you really have to check into things to protect yourself…….just because it’s for sale and seems like it’s there to help and protect you doesn’t mean it does. I’m sure a bike helmet is better than none, but I’m sure some are better than others, look into it when you’re buying them, it might make a big difference between a brain injury and/or death.
Also, as for sunscreen, you need to do your homework. Some of the chemicals in some of the products can cause allergies, SPF’s over 25-30 don’t help, so do not bother going higher. Check what you’re buying, other products have caustic chemicals that are just bad for you….check them. It might be worth a little work to protect yourself a little more than from just the sun!
